2021 Husqvarna Vitpilen 401 - Best Beginner Bike?

Built for the metropolis playground, Husqvarna's new cafe racer-inspired 2021 Vitpilen 401 is guaranteed to turn heads with its futuristic styling and performance capabilities. But what makes this any different from other highly acclaimed entry-level naked bikes in this division? Well actually...a surprising amount.

Extracting the compact 373cc single-cylinder engine and frame from their parent company’s KTM 390 Duke, the Vitpilen 401 has been blessed with the foundations of a solid bike.

Don’t assume this is simply a modernised neo-urban replica of the 390 Duke. The most surprising aspect of the bike is just how different the 401 feels, despite sharing many similarities and parts to the KTM.

The single-cylinder engine loves to rev and produces 37Nm of torque. Aided by two counter balancers to help reduce engine vibrations, the bike feels smooth, yet retains the characteristics of a single.

Weighing in at only 152kgs (wet), the power to weight ratio has huge potential for street performance and fun.

Capping off at a 10,000rpm rev limiter, the 401 is capable of sitting comfortably at highway speeds of 110km/h.

Featuring a smooth 6-speed gearbox transmission, the shifting is swift, denying any false neutrals. It is worth mentioning that the gearing is relatively tall, which is highly useful when commuting on the highway. Paired with the bottom end torque of a single-cylinder, riders get the best of both worlds.

What makes the 401 stand out in this highly competitive market, is features you tend not to see on beginner bikes. The suspension for example. A fully adjustable WP suspension, offering high-quality dynamic handling optimisation for the urban environment.

Connecting directly with the swingarm, the rear features a progressive damping system.

Fitted with hydraulic Bybre (By Brembo) brake callipers and combined with a 320mm front and 230mm rear, the 401 has controllable and smooth braking power. Ensuring the highest level of safety, a state-of-the-art Bosch ABS system is fitted.
