Riding Route: Maleny To Palmwoods

Snapshot

  • Distance: 83 km
  • Riding time: 1:20 hrs
  • Location: Sunshine Coast, Queensland
  • Route: Maleny > Kenilworth > Mapleton > Montville > Palmwoods
  • Road surface: Sealed & Gravel
  • Difficulty: Medium

Taste the ultimate in spectacular Sunshine Coast hinterland scenery as you cruise the sensational roads winding up and down the mountains and through lush rural countryside.

Fuel up your machine and stomach at the foodie haven of Maleny, then cruise west and find the Mary River, which leads you around to Kenilworth. The delicious goods from the local dairy industry is yours to taste at the Kenilworth Dairies shop.

Lean right and cruise past grazing dairy cows and the unique Obi Obi Hall (it almost became firewood for fire-fighting practise, but that’s another story), then get ready for the thrilling steep climb up Obi Obi Road to Mapleton. The road splits into two here, so it’s a single one-way lane to the top. So much fun!

You are now on the crest of the mountain range with stunning views east to the Coral Sea.

Pic opp: Mapleton Falls has a sheer drop of 120 metres over an escarpment. It’s an easy stroll to the lookout where you can enjoy stunning views of the rainforest and Obi Obi Valley.

From quaint Montville, a quick lean left becomes a winding descent, dropping you down into the valley below to Palmwoods.

Get dirty  If you decide to do this route in the opposite direction, Obi Obi Road has a 3 km dirt section which is narrow, windy and skirted by a deep valley – not recommended for inexperienced riders.

Hazards: The Sunshine Coast’s gorgeous villages are popular with tourists, so stay on alert for some erratic driving.
