Riding Route: Mount Hotham

Riding Overview:

  • Distance: 205 km
  • Riding Time: 2:55 hrs
  • Location: Victorian high country
  • Route: Bruthen > Omeo > Mount Hotham > Harrietville > Bright
  • Difficulty: Challenging: Steep, Tight Corners

Great Alpine Road thrills almost immediately as it winds joyously alongside the Tambo River. Corners appear again and again in front of your handlebars.

Cruise into the old gold-mining town of Omeo to fuel up, then put on a jumper and get ready for the Great Alpine Road to live up to its name.

The road rises and the temperature drops as you climb up and up into Victoria’s stunning high country to the popular resort village of Hotham Heights. Keep an eye out for tourists on four wheels, bicycles and on foot.

A few minutes up the road is Mount Hotham itself.

The mountains catch the clouds, which can mean foggy roads and limited visibility, and in colder months, icy roads are an ever-present hazard, so take care.

Just past Mount Hotham, Danny’s Lookout, Blowhard Hut and Renes Lookout all offer infinite views of mountain tops – if you’re below the clouds!

Kiss the sky as you skim the mountain range and valleys fall away to your left and right. Breathe in the sweet air and savour the moment.

Then descend approx 1,350 metres down seemingly endless steep twisties to the quaint village of Harrietville, then follow the valley floor to Bright.

Bright is an energetic tourist town with many eating, drinking and accommodation options. Stay a night or two and soak in the vibe.
