The CFMOTO 800NK Sport, an affordable powerhouse addition to the naked market.

CFMoto originally hit Australian shores in 2005 competing in the ATV and UTV market but has since grown to now include a large range of motorcycles as part of their lineup. In 2020, their motorcycle range focused wholly on the LAMS market, but in collaboration with KTM, they are now making huge inroads to the mid-sized capacity market. CFMoto has emerged as a force to be reckoned with. Over recent years, this brand has crafted formidable machines that not only deliver stellar performance but also do so without breaking the bank. Enter the CFMoto 800NK, a naked bike that exemplifies the brand's commitment to quality, reliability, and affordability. The 800NK Sport retails at $10,990 rideaway and the Advanced model retails at $12,490 rideaway.

In a market teeming with exceptional contenders like Suzuki's GSX-8S, Honda's CB750 Hornet, Yamaha's MT-07, and even the KTM 790 Duke sharing its platform, standing out is no mean feat. Yet, the CFMoto 800NK Sport manages to carve its niche producing a bike that is fun to ride with plenty of usuable power. Sporting a powerhouse engine inherited from the KTM 790 Duke, it exudes a raw, thrash-worthy character. Torque pours in from the depths of the rev range, propelling the bike with gusto up to a hair-raising 10,000rpm. However, a caveat lingers—the throttle at low revs lacks smoothness, and the gearbox doesn't quite attain the pinnacle of slickness. Yet, when pushed to its limits, the 800NK Sport revels in its element, with a rigid chassis and suspension that eagerly comply, courtesy of the fully adjustable KYB units.

Delving into the nitty-gritty of ride quality and brakes, the 800NK Sport boasts responsiveness and agility. At 186kg and a wheelbase of 1465mm, it straddles the line between supermoto flick-ability and stability mid-corner. The KYB suspension, fully adjustable front and rear, leans towards the stiffer side, catering admirably to aggressive riders. Braking power, handled by four-piston J.Juan calipers and 320mm discs up front, while commendable, lacks the initial bite and feedback characteristic of premium-brand components under heavy braking.

Transitioning to the heart of the matter—the engine—the 800NK Sport flaunts the familiar 799cc parallel twin from the KTM 790 Duke stable. Pumping out a claimed 74kW of power and 81Nm of torque, it surpasses competitors like the Suzuki GSX-8S and Honda Hornet 750. Its roadster guise allows the engine to shine, delivering a torrent of torque and an exhilarating soundtrack. Yet, the rough edges persist, with a slightly aggressive throttle pickup in 'Sport' mode and a gearbox that occasionally falters in the finesse department.

Being made in China, many people downplay the build quality of CFMoto motorcycles. However, this is simply not the case. The 800NK Sport impresses with its polished finish, technology features and overall build quality. From engine casing details to the dash, it exudes sophistication beyond its price point. Given the shared platform with the KTM 790 Duke, any past issues regarding reliability are expected to be ironed out, ensuring a reliable, and extremely fun ride.

When it comes to equipment, the 800NK Sport presents a mixed bag. ABS, three riding modes, and cruise control add a touch of sophistication but the absence of traction control and the slightly awkward placement of switchgear buttons highlight areas for improvement. A redeeming feature is the span-adjustable clutch and brake levers, contributing to rider comfort. The 5” TFT dash, complemented by Bluetooth connectivity, serves as a sleek information hub. Whilst the Bluetooth connectivity allows for a phone and helmet speaker system, such as a Cardo Unit like the one I use, to be connected at the same time, I found that it is better to connect the helmet speaker system direct to your phone as this resulted in a better connection with no dropouts. The CFMoto Ride App connects seamlessly to the motorbike allowing you to track important ride information, service intervals and vital systems.

For an extra $1,500, the 800NK Advanced includes a 8" full TFT display with Apple Carplay and full voice integrated, keyless start, a bi-directional Quickshifter and a steering dampener. Both models feature a 15L fuel tank which provides plenty of range.

The CFMoto 800NK also produces a very pleasant, aggressive rumble from stock which may be improved to an even more aggressive sound with aftermarket slip-on exhaust.

Conclusion

The CFMoto 800NK Sport emerges as a commendable contender in the realm of budget naked bikes, offering a potent mix of performance, affordability, and distinctive style. While challenges persist, the 800NK Sport holds its ground as a compelling option for riders seeking an exhilarating ride without breaking the bank.
