6 Tips To Stay Cool This Summer

With the Australian summer season officially here, many of us will be itching to take advantage of the warm weather. As temperatures increase, staying cool and hydrated, especially during longer rides has never been more important.

To battle the heat, here are the best tips and gear recommendations to keep you cool through this year's scorching summer.

Why is this important? Heat exhaustion is commonplace when riding, as hot temperatures paired with lack of hydration and physical activity lead to fatigue, dizziness, and a slow reaction time. This is not only highly dangerous for yourself, but also for others.

  1. Water Breaks Are Key!

Sounds like a no-brainer, but hydration is key. It prevents symptoms of heat exhaustion like dehydration and keeps your body cooled and rejuvenated. Depending on the magnitude of the temperature, it is recommended that riders should pull over every 30 mins for a drink break. However many riders forget or simply refuse to interrupt their riding sessions for a “water break”.

  1. Hydration Backpacks

This is when a motorcycle-specific hydration backpack comes in handy, as it's a quicker, easier, and hassle-free method of consuming water whilst on your bike. A highly versatile and well-designed pack is the Ogio Atlas 3L Hydration backpack.

With a dedicated anti-sloshing bladder, an insulter cooled fabric, and built to suit all body types, the Ogio Atlas is an overall bulletproof pack. Priced at $129.95, this hydration pack will keep you hydrated during a full day of riding.

  1. Avoid Riding During The Middle Of The Day

The sun is out on full blast and temperatures are generally at their hottest during the middle of the day. To avoid this, plan ahead of your ride, opting for earlier or late afternoon sessions. It’s a pretty safe option to truly avoid the worst of the summer heat.

  1. Take Breaks Under Shade

As mentioned before, it is best to take regular breaks, not only for yourself but to allow your bike a well deserved cool down. During these breaks, shade becomes prime real estate, so search for a covered area, ideally positioned on elevatored ground as it allows you to catch the breeze easier.

  1. Cooling Undershirt Trick

Ever try soaking your riding undershirt with cool water? This is one trick that is incredibly handy, and I've been using it for years. Bring along a singlet or an undershirt that you don’t mind getting wet. Soak the shirt in cool water and wear it under your riding jacket/ jersey, directly applying the cool fabric to your skin.

Depending on the weather and humidity, you’ll get at least 20 - 35mins of coolness to your upper body. Many jackets will have vented mesh for breathability and airflow, so hot air will be constantly flowing through, enhancing the coolness of the soaked undershirt.

  1. Motorcycle Cooling Vest

If you're after something a little more effective and less DIY, consider looking into a specialised motorcycling cooling vest. The concept of a cooling vest is something I had rarely considered, however after experimenting with them over last summer, I regret not trying one out sooner. These specially made vests are an evaporation cooler for your torso.

When the vest is wet with water, the Hyperkewl system absorbs the moisture and stores it for up to eight hours for a cooling effect over the outside temperature. For the best results, pair the cooling vest under your mesh summer jacket or jersey. Leatt Coolit Vest is sleek, quality, and most importantly works.

Simply soak for 2 minutes in cool water and get up to 6 hours of riding use. Coming in at $119.96 AUD, the Leatt cooling vest is an innovative way to stay cool this summer.
