Riding Route: Gordon Dam, Hobart

Snapshot

  • Distance: 165 km
  • Riding Time: 2:40 hrs
  • Location: Tasmania
  • Route: Hobart > New Norfolk > Maydena > Strathgordon > Gordon Dam
  • Difficulty: Easy

Venture deep into the heart of Tasmania’s green wilderness on this dead-end route into remote country.

Gordon Dam is located in Southwest National Park, one of the world’s most remote wildernesses, covering 600,000 hectares.

This is a truly special experience – and you won’t get lost because there’s only one road in and out!

Maydena is the last village you will pass through. We recommend you fill up your machine and belly, before boldly venturing west.

Then be prepared for the sublime landscape to take your breath away again and again, as you cruise on endless ribbon-like roads winding through cool dense forests, past soaring rugged mountain ranges and around vast blue lakes.

Lake Pedder and Lake Gordon combined contain more than 37 times the water volume of Sydney Harbour.

You will likely have the road to yourself most of the time – one of the joys of riding in Tassie – but be vigilant for local cute critters wandering onto the roads. As always, be especially vigilant around dawn and dusk.

Gordon Dam signals the end of the road. Get your camera ready – the dam is taller than the Sydney Harbour Bridge and holds back more water than in all of Sydney Harbour.

Option 1: backtrack to Hobart.

Option 2: stay overnight at beautiful Strathgordon and cruise back the next morning.

This is one of our favourite rides in Tassie and we’re sure you’ll love it, too!
